Plaque: Bombed police barracks

Lieutenant Parachutist, Leopold Vande Meerssche
were imprisoned by the Germans in these barracks, in violation of the rules of international law and here they perished during the bombardment of 7 September 1943.
Remember their devotion to their king and country. Pray for them...

Due to the presence of two barracks and Etterbeek railway station this area was bombarded heavily by the Anglo-American forces on 7 September 1943 at about 9.15 am. Ixelles alone suffered over 200 dead.
