de Coster at rue de l’Arbre Bénit de Coster at rue de l’Arbre Bénit

Plaque: de Coster at rue de l’Arbre Bénit

Here died, 7 May 1879, Charles Theodore de Coster. In a famous book he transformed into a hero of Belgian freedom of the 16th century, Tyl Ulenspiegel, symbol from the middle ages of the battle of the peasants against the oppression of the towns.

Original inscription:

ICI MOURUT LE 7 MAI 1879
CHARLES THEODORE DE COSTER
DANS UN LIVRE CELEBRE
IL TRANSFORMA EN HEROS DE LA LIBERTE BELGE
AU XVI SIECLE
TYL ULENSPIEGEL
SYMBOLE AU MOYEN-AGE
DE LA LUTTE DES PAYSANS
CONTRE L’OPPRESSION DES VILLES

The medallion to the left shows a medieval couple and a bonfire - presumably a scene from the book.
