Memorial

Hendrik Conscience Hendrik Conscience

Plaque: Hendrik Conscience

Here lived and died Hendrik Conscience
who learned his people to read.
1812 - 1912

Original inscription:

HIER
WOONDE EN OVERLEED
HENDRIK CONSCIENCE
DIE ZIJN VOLKLEERDE LEZEN
1812 - 1912

To see the plaque fully one has to enter the gates of the Wiertz Museum. We were there on a day the Museum was not open but the gates were. The dates indicate that the plaque was put up on the centenary of Conscience's birth. Our Flemish is improving but still very weak and we are not happy with the translation of the last sentence.
