Memorial

Jean Mistler Jean Mistler

Plaque: Jean Mistler

1940 - 1944 In this building was founded and printed the clandestine journal "Free Belgium - White Legion", by the ex condemned to death, Jean Mistler.

Original inscription:

1940 - 1944
EN CET IMMEUBLE FUT FONDE
ET IMPRIME LE JOURNAL CLANDESTIN
"LA LIBRE BELGIQUE - LEGION BLANCHE"
PAR L'EX CONDAMNE A MORT
MISTLER JEAN

The translation of the phrase "ex condemned to death" is not satisfactory but then we are not sure the French is any more elegant. One possible interpretation is that Mistler fought in WW1, was condemned to death and escaped, thus surviving to found a clandestine paper in WW2. If so then that is true dedication to the resistance cause.
