THE FIRST WALL AROUND
BRUSSELS WAS BUILT WITH
SANDSTONE AT THE END OF THE
XI TH CENTURY OR AT THE
START OF THE XII TH.
OVER 4000 METRES IN
LENGTH, IT HAD SEVEN
GATES AND SOME FIFTY
DEFENSIVE TOWERS.
THE CORNER TOWER WAS
CLOSE TO THE
"STEENPOORT" GATE, A
PRISON FOR CRIMINALS
AND POLITICAL OFFENDERS
FRANCOIS ANNEESSENS,
DEAN OF THE GUILD, WAS
IMPRISONED THERE IN 1791.
