A guild leader, in 1356 he chased the Count of Flanders out of Brussels, tearing down the Count’s standard which had been raised on the Maison de l’Etoile in the grand Place. Later the men of one of his other opponents, Gaasbeek, caught him, tore out his tongue and cut off his right foot. This resulted in his death in the Maison de l’Etoile.
