Born in Les Waleffes of peasants, he entered the postal service and rose to be director-general of the universal postal Union at Berne. Novelist, known as the Bard of the Hesbaye (the area where he grew up), he was President of the Belgian Writers' Association 1920-34. He died in an accident at Brussels North station.
