With his brothers, Gustave and Claude, he was one of the first to use reinforced concrete for construction, exploiting its possibilities and not disguising its look. Examples of their work are the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Saint-Jean church at Montmartre. Their father, a stonemason, had been exiled from France after the Paris Commune.
