Subject

As master of the ancient guild of the "Quatre-Couronnés" (masons and sculptors) he was one of the leaders in the rebellion against new taxes imposed by the government of the Austrian Netherlands. Arrested on the corner of Borgval and rue des Pierres (quite nearby) he was beheaded on Grand Place. Prior to this (obviously) he had designed the two fountains in the interior courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville, symbolising the rivers: the Escaut and the Meuse.
