The issue of missing children is particularly poignant in Belgium. Marc Dutroux was arrested in 1996 and (in 2002) is still awaiting trial for the kidnapping and murder of a number of young girls. The case has raised many questions and caused an unprecedented public outcry concerning the police handling of the investigation and the number of children that go missing each year. There are suspicions that Dutroux was not alone and that there is a conspiracy to hush up the affair.
