Specialised in portraits, historical scenes and genre subjects (of which an example is held by Ixelles Museum). After some European travels he settled in Brussels in 1848, at the invitation of his colleague, Louis Gallait. Here he stayed and married Caroline van der Elst having two daughters: Eva, a musician and Aline, an actor.
