Born Brussels. Son of Franz Gailliard. Not to be confused with Jean-Jacques Gaillard who was a printer and bookbinder.
Outside the Gailliard's home is a modern Ixelles information plaque which gives the following: Jean-Jacques was a Surimpressionist painter. He was a member of the Royal Belgian Academy (Fine Arts Section) and was one of the first Belgian abstract painters of the 1920s. He was named "Prince des Peintres" in succession to James Ensor.
