French, born in Besançon. Examples of work: Les Misérables, Hunchback of Notre Dame. He came to Belgium as a tourist many times and came as a political exile from the Louis Napoleon coup in France in 1851. Stayed at the house in the Grand Place for 7 months in 1852. Stayed at Place des Barricades a number of times. Paul Verlaine came (with his mother) in 1868 to visit him, and was astonished that Hugo knew "Poèmes Saturniens" by heart. Later Hugo sent him a dedicated Homme Qui Rit.
